Proof of concept 12 MW

Project description

In 2016, tests were carried out in the Ifremer wave basin in Brest, France. The 1:50 scale model represents a 12 MW floating wind turbine on a 66m x 66m foundation. A wind generator simulates the wind, and the geometry of the blades and the control of their angle of attack are adapted to faithfully reproduce the aerodynamic forces.

Results

Experience confirms the 3 advantages identified by our numerical simulations:

  • The turbine naturally faces into the wind, even with swells at 90° to the wind.
  • Despite its small size, the float can withstand waves equivalent to 24 metres peak to trough.
  • The turbine produces the equivalent of 12 MW with a pitch of less than 4°.

The project was carried out with the support of the Agence Nationale de la Recherche, Ifremer and France Energies Marines.
